Session 8: The discussion
Podcast 3, Session 8 Show Notes:
Intro with mention of show notes located at http://www.676engman.blogspot.com/
Recording from EDUC 605 on July 13,2006 with Dr. Crowell discussing that students can learn anything at any age, see if you can hear SpiderDuncan or Mr. Sexy himself, FlyFishingforMathJr.
News update on the Sawtooth Complex Fire and Mallard Fire, check out the progress at these websites:http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/, http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/ and http://www.nifc.gov/fireinfo/nfn.html
Lastly, a tech tip about double spacing a paper.
Closing riff
*Special thanks to BB King and www.wavcentral.com for sound bites*
Notes and comments:
I tried many things on this project. I used three different microphones, and you should be able to notice the difference in qualities. I prefer the microphone I ended the show with which is a Logitech USB Headset microphone, the other two microphones were: a headset microphone from my cordless phone (used for the Fire Report), and a Macintosh circle microphone from the olden days (used in Part 1 for EDUC 605).
I recorded with my laptop and my personal computer to spice it up.
I downloaded sounds from WavCentral and placed a few tidbits in the show.
I played bits and pieces of a BB King CD I had for the intro and the cheesy tech tip (yes, I know I cannot sing, that’s why I teachJ).
I messed around with the settings in Audacity for example: Amplify, normalize, fade in and out, I played around with the input and output levels, the playback speed, tempo, and pitch.
Questions maybe someone can answer:
How can you copy a sound bite to a place in the middle of a show so it shows up on a second row?
How can you add silence to just one row of audio?
How can you adjust other media to match your recording speeds and tempo so it sounds alright?

Say Dale,
This podcast had a v-e-r-y different feeling to it!
Your laid back vocals and your experimentation throughout the podcast is very “artsy” and yet included blocks of information to the listener.
The demonstration of the various microphones is quite enlightening and reveals just how important a good microphone really is.
The top ten list on the Southern California fires is a strong block in your podcast. The podcast not only informs the listener about the fires but also promotes the blogsite where the show notes provide website addressees for the listener to seek additional information about the topic.
Your “Mouse Has the Blues” tune is humorous. BB King would be proud!
I have a question about how you set the microphone for the Dr. Crowell interview. There’s a lot of ambient noise.
Ctrl 8, Ctrl 2, Ctrl S. This does work!

Questions maybe someone can answer:
How can you copy a sound bite to a place in the middle of a show so it shows up on a second row?
Are you talking about cross segueing, insert editing or assemble editing, a sound bite into a second audio track?

How can you add silence to just one row of audio?
You should be able to delete it. If you don’t need the audio on a particular track, just pot it down (lower) the audio to zero, then record your mix. You won’t hear that particular audio on the mastered mix.

How can you adjust other media to match your recording speeds and tempo so it sounds alright?
This is not a simple question to answer. In the selection itself, you have different choices: you can change the pitch without changing tempo, change the tempo without changing the pitch, or you can change the rate which will change both the tempo and the pitch.
In any case, this will call for audio software and a lot of experimentation.
As you may have found out, even when attempting to match audio volume levels, not all audio is recorded at the same capture, nor is it mixed or mastered the same way.

Thanks James,
"Dr. Crowell interview" was an open Macintosh mic that was recording the entire class. I jsut chose that section from his lecture to place in this project.
How can you copy a sound bite to a place in the middle of a show so it shows up on a second row?
I am using Audacity and trying to put a 10 second sound bite part way through my show. Audacity will place it on a second row and at the start of the show. I cannot seem to place it in the middle with no sound in front of it. I am not sure what cross segueing is (I will look up later).
How can you add silence to just one row of audio? THANKS
How can you adjust other media to match your recording speeds and tempo so it sounds alright? THANKS, I was hoping there was a n easier way :-)
Thanks Keith, as for: "Will future podcasts include Canadian forest fires?"
Stay tuned to my Podcasts to find out :-)
I will shoot Dr. Crowell this podcast.
Thanks Joe, My 'cast is not quite Math Comedy Theater, but I had to try :-)
"i want to thank you for giving me hints on the update/renew adjustments on feedburner." No problem
Dale,
I think Wes Andrews expalins it well...
It does, however sound like alot of steps. One would think that there would be an easier way to do this in Audacity.
But it's FREE...

Thanks We for this: "Hit the record button to start a new line of sound (i.e. a new track). On this line, past in the specific sound byte you want to insert into the middle of your show. Then..." I never thought to try that.
Your show is coming along great.
Dale
I have never found a way to add silence to just one track in Audacity. Bummer eh?
Position your cursor where you want the sound on the track to line up and then go to (this is from memory so forgive me if I get the wrong menu) project and select line up audio with marker or cursor. This will move the audio to that point in the track.
I've never figured out how to ajust speed of audio to make it sound right.
Great job and thanks for the information on different michrophones!
Thanks Joe, and Leah for your responses :-)
As for my much anticipated 'One' appearance, we will have to wait, SIMON says I cannot sing :-) and I need my own band
Thanks Dr. Newberry, I will attempt your tips in this next one and let you knw how they work.
No problem on the Mic test, I figured that would be some valuable info for all of us. :-)
Happy Sunday
